Oulujoki Church

Oulujoki Church, built in 1908, is the only surviving wooden Art Nouveau church in Northern Finland, located about six kilometres from the centre of Oulu. The Karelian-inspired design by the provincial architect Viktor J. Sucksdorff brings the national romanticism of the 20th century to life in a stunning way. The parishes along the Oulujoki river donated the timber for the church and it was traditionally transported to the site by floating along the Oulujoki river.

A unique feature of the church is the altar, pulpit, choir stalls and organ, all combined into an impressive whole on the central axis.

The old altar structure was reconstructed in 1983-84, when the entire church was restored under the direction of architect Anna-Maija Ylimaula. The second bell in the church tower bears the national romantic text "O Lord bless the people of Finland".

This church is part of the pilgrimage route along the Oulu River. Read more about the route via the link!
